Portsmouth is the home of the Royal Navy, and is one of the country's best-linked ferry ports. The Portsmouth harbour has three main terminals - the Continental Ferry Port, the Naval Base, and the Isle of Wight (Ryde) Passenger Ferry Terminal.

Four ferry companies serve the Continental Ferry Terminal. LD Lines crosses to Le Havre in France. The trip takes about five hours and 30 minutes during daytime and about seven hours and 30 minutes at night. PandO Portsmouth goes to Spain twice a week. The trip takes 30 hours. Brittany Ferries crosses to Cherbourg, Caen, and St. Malo in France everyday. Condor Ferries provide services to passengers going to St. Helier in Jersey and St Peter Port in Guernsey everyday (except Sundays). The Isle of Wight Passenger Passenger Ferry Terminal, on the other hand, is serviced by Wightlink Ferries. There are daily crossing to Ryde. The ferry ride takes 15 minutes, and the car ferry takes about 35 minutes.

Travel by Taxi

It is not advisable to take an airport taxi from Heathrow Airport to Portsmouth because it can get very expensive. It is much cheaper to book a taxi instead. Visitors coming from the Portsmouth Harbour stations can take a short taxi ride to the university.
